Growth, Differentiation & Stem Cell Factors

Proteins in this grouping can be considered as biochemical messengers. They are secreted by a number of different cell types and exhibit diverse biological effects via intercellular communication during proliferation, differentiation, morphogenesis and angiogenesis. Some have direct or indirect activities on stem cell differentiation and development.

Growth and differentiation factors are secreted cytokines that generally act locally to stimulate cell growth, differentiation and survival through endocrine, paracrine or autocrine mechanisms. Stem cell factors are often transcription factors and exert function on stem cells including neural, hematopoietic, mesenchymal and pluripotent cell types.

Proteins in this group include members of the EGF, FGF, IGF, Hedgehog, PDGF, VEGF and Wnt families.
