Chemerin, an adipokine and member of the Cystatin superfamily, is highly expressed in white adipose tissue. It is a ligand for the GPCR ChemR23 (CMKLR1, DEZ) and it acts as a chemoattractant for cells expressing this receptor. Chemerin is a secreted protein that, after cleavage by serine protease, becomes an active protein that can be found in plasma and serum. Studies show bioactive chemerin generation occurs during the early stages of inflammation, implicating a role as a bridge between innate and adaptive immunity.
